The use of optical brighteners in laundry detergents imparts such a high degree of brilliance to fabrics at such a low cost that there use has become overwhelmingly ubiquitous. These molecules absorb UV light and emit some of that energy as blue light, which tends to offset the natural dinging of fabrics.
